Milnox-MI is a soft granule coated with special dispersing agents for use in rubber compounds which are cured on microwave systems, LCM, hot air, hot air curing systems or high pressure curing systems. Moisture which is present in all rubber chemicals, especially fillers, will be absorbed. MilNOX MI reacts with moisture when it is in the process of conversion to vapour and gas. It binds with H2O molecule to form compound that remains stable at the processing temperature. This will prevent the generation of free vapours and gas. This reaction takes place while the uncured rubber compounds are in storage.
It is also possible to use Milnox-MI as an acid absorber e.g. in systems where chlorine is likely to be present. The corrosive effect of HCl on metal parts (e.g. vulcanization moulds) can be diminished.
Milnox-MI has a delayed action but a fast reaction. Milnox-MI is inactive during mixing but then reacts at a quicker rate, permitting shorter standing time between mixing and final production. After mixing, the storage time of the compound should be at least four hours.
Milnox-MI has clear advantages due to its desensitized form. The most important aspect is that the dosage may be reduced significantly; therefore the effect of the filler part on physical properties of the compound is reduced.
Milnox-MI does not harden over a period of storage and hence is not likely to pose any problems during dispersion. Milnox-MI granules are very soft and this ensures quality and dispersion even in very soft rubber compounds, e.g. sponge rubber, and on open mills will be fast and free of hassles.
One of the reasons for the softness of Milnox-MI is the fact that the dispersing agents used to produce the granules have no melting or softening point. Hence easy dispersion is assured immediately after addition to the compound. It is worth noting that Milnox-MI is made up of extremely fine particles.
Advantages
• Eliminates porosity, white specks or bubble formation
• Removes moisture suspended in batch
• Enhances ageing proprieties
• Improves quality of the product
• Minimises production wastage
• Reduces curing time
• Increases Out-put.
Recommended use
• Pressure less continuous curing systems like microwave, LCM, fluid beds or hot air
• Low-pressure curing in the cable industry
• In compounds cured in heat transfer fluids
• High-pressure curing systems.
Dosage
The dosage of Milnox-MI depends on the moisture contained in the compound. The molecular weight of Milnox-MI is 56, and 18 for water. By these relations it can be seen that for every part of water by weight expected in the rubber compound, approx. 4 parts of Milnox-MI are required in order to avoid blisters on profiles. It is a standard practice to add quantities in excess of this amount, however, usually between 2 and 10 PHR calculated on the filler quantity. We recommend adding Milnox-MI in the second mixing stage. Milnox-MI has to be added along with or just before adding accelerators. A big part of the humidity can escape in the first step at higher mixing temperatures without being absorbed. Milnox-MI can be added to the compound if mixing temperatures of more than 85 °C are achieved (melting range of the PE foil 60–85 °C).
Attention…!!! AN OVERDOSAGE CAN CAUSE WHITE SPECKS
Milnox-MI which has not reacted with the moisture in the rubber compound will later on react with humidity. As a result white specks will be observed because Milnox-MI after reaction has a three-fold bigger volume. Therefore take care to avoid overdose of Milnox-MI.( Dosage depends on the percentage of moisture suspended in the batch)
Precaution:
Do not keep MilNOX- MI packets open in humid conditions. (If kept open there are chances for MilNOX- MI to react with atmospheric humidity. This will reduce shelf life of the product) Totally reacted MilNOX- MI will not have any effect in the purpose of application.
